Pepe Reina, the 42-year-old Spanish goalkeeper, has officially announced his retirement, marking the end of an extraordinary and decorated football career. He will conclude his playing days with Italian side Como, who face Inter Milan in their final Serie A fixture this Friday.

A product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, Reina was part of Spain’s legendary squad that won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championships in 2008 and 2012.

He rose to prominence after joining Liverpool from Villarreal in 2005. During his nine-year spell at Anfield, Reina made 394 appearances, won the FA Cup and League Cup, and claimed the Premier League Golden Glove for three consecutive seasons (2005–06 to 2007–08) for keeping the most clean sheets.

Reina’s club career spanned several top teams, including Bayern Munich, Napoli, AC Milan, Aston Villa, Lazio, a second stint at Villarreal, and finally Como. In 2023, he celebrated a major milestone by playing his 1,000th competitive match.

Reflecting on his retirement, Reina told Movistar:

“A very beautiful career is coming to an end, a very full life. I feel very fortunate for everything I’ve experienced. I didn’t expect it, but the time feels right to bring it to a close here.”

Reina bows out as one of the most respected goalkeepers of his generation, known for his leadership, consistency, and contributions to both club and country.
